Animals. Rex’s latest voyage, the martyred dog with millions of views on social media

Sad epilogue for Rex, the martyred dog collected by the Strasbourg SPA, who will have benefited only from a short retreat of a few months with a Moselle family. This is the Facebook page Mes chouchous de la SPA care announced the dark news: “REX, the loulou with millions of views on Facebook, died this morning, the first day of summer 2022. His health has deteriorated sharply on Saturday night despite his monthly visit to the veto the day before and the emergency intervention of a veterinarian at home on Monday afternoon ”.

He spends his old days in Philippsburg

This German shepherd was rescued in January 2021 from the SPA after spending eight years locked in a small shed in a commune in the south of the Lower Rhine, forced to lie down on his excrement. Reported by riverine residents, suspicions of dog abuse were confirmed by a SPA employee who discovered the animal. The unfortunate loulou had then been picked up by the animal shelter after his masters agreed to sign the abandonment papers. A delicate repatriation operation had taken place; the dog, fearful, must have fallen asleep with the hypodermic rifle.

The story relayed on social media has traveled the globe, garnering tens of thousands of comments, shares and likes. Proposals for adoption came from the United States, England, and all of France. REX’s photo album reached two million views on Facebook in 2021.

The family welcome very affected

Despite his difficult past, Rex has no behavior problems. “We had the opportunity to give him the path he deserves.” We didn’t hesitate, it was out of the question that he still stays at the shelter “, Jean-Luc Dreux and his wife, his new masters, told DNA. “In the morning, I wake up around 7 o’clock, get on the edge of the bed, and the first hug session begins.” […] He has been missing it for years, he is happy to go out and be with someone. When we know what he went through, poor thing, we’re super happy to see him like that. »

A sadly short-lived happiness: “His masters watched him day and night during this heat wave.” Rex took his last breath early this morning. The family is devastated and inconsolable, ”the SPA’s My Favorites page continued in a tribute text. “It simply came to our notice then. This kind “Little Angel” was really not born under a good star! Peace to his soul. »

The Dreux family was badly affected and could not be reached this Wednesday. SPA president in Strasbourg Marie Amalfitano, however, confirmed the information, stating that two volunteers would visit the adopters.
