At the SPA in La Roche-sur-Yon: “We are moving towards the end of the drive and this is a good thing for animals”

Niche have fund from the business area behind the Burger King, in Impasse François Cevert, le refuge of the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) welcomes the abandoned, seized or lost animals from 1974 to La Roche-sur-Yon.

On this green oasis of several hectares, four kennels partly rehabilitated this year and an animal infirmary, each year host 400 animals, mostly dogs and cats. The venue is open to the public 7 days a week, every afternoon.

400 animals per year

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of New Pets (NACs), ferrets or rabbits that people do not want to keep. We welcome them to the dropper according to our possibilities.

Arriving at the Vendée site in 2016, this adoption Challenger carefully looks after her four-legged boarders, as do the seven employees and the forty or so volunteers who revolve around the structure.

A triple mission

Their mission is threefold: serve as a pound for lost or found animals. “A dozen communes, including La Roche-sur-Yon, have an agreement with our shelter, which allows us to accommodate stray or runaway animals found on the outskirts of cities,” said Valérie Pornet.

After a while, these animals come to feed the shelter and are offered for adoption.

The summer of abandonment

The second mission is recover the animals that the owners no longer want. For all sorts of reasons, people abandon their beasts : animal behavior, financial situation of the foyer, divorce, health or allergy problems …

“Summer is also a time that is always critical: people who take a dog or a naked cat are inevitably anticipating the management of the holiday, the organization that this implies. In the summer, abandonment is more frequent, ”says the manager, who reminds us that taking care of an animal is not a trivial act.

Finding the right pet for the right adopter

Finally, the main mission of the SPA is to offer animals – all vaccinated and neutered – upon adoption. Finding the right pet for the right adopter. “This is our job: the knowledge of our animals, the experience, the analysis allowed us to find the right pair.” »

A questionnaire is submitted to the candidates for adoption in order to find cohesion with the animal.

“We are not going to give a Malinois who needs mental exercise, games, and work to a family in an apartment,” said Valérie Pornet.

Large dogs and category dogs often have a harder time finding a taker. These are the most numerous at the shelter. About 30 dogs are currently waiting for a home.

To the new regulation that will ban pet shops from selling dogs and cats should enter into force in 2024.

A service allowed thanks to the professionalization of staff in recent years.
