Car tire wear is 2,000 times more polluting than exhaust fumes, study reports

Analyzes of 14 different brands of cars show that tire wear is far more harmful than exhaust emissions.

Pollution doesn’t always come from where you think it is … Analyzes conducted by the independent company Emission Analytics show that the tire wear of a polluted car is actually much more than the exhaust emissions. And not just a little, 2,000 times more !

The numbers seem mind-boggling, but the four tires of a car are up to a ton of ultra-fine particles per kilometer traveled. Often toxic compounds, sometimes even carcinogenic, that will pollute the air, water, soil …

Another problem with these ultra-fine particles is their size, less than 23 nanometers, which allows access to the organs of the human body through the bloodstream.

Exhausts become good students

Conversely, the exhausts of recent cars are very well equipped with anti-pollution filters. The newest of them are even well below the legal limit. “Exhaust pipes are now so clean of pollutants that if we started from scratch, it wouldn’t even bother to regulate them.” explains one of the researchers who participated in the study.

The analyzes were performed on vehicles of 14 different brands. Emissions Analytics is now advocating for the implementation ofa regulation of ultra-fine particles, currently non-existent in Europe and the United States. Rapid replacement of used tires or defects will, for example, limit the emission of ultra-fine particles.
