A 44-year-old woman was on trial on Monday in the Albertville (Savoie) Correctional Court for “voluntary abandonment of a domesticated, domesticated or captive animal.” She had lived with 111 discussions in a house, in catastrophic hygiene conditions.

Following reports of animal welfare associations, the veterinary services and gendarmes intervened in a house in Saint-Julien-Montdenis in May 2021. They had found 111 discussions closed in the dark in several rooms of the house, invaded by an odor of urine and feces, states “Dauphiné”.

Prevenue had found herself in a comparable situation in her previous home, in Côte-d’Or. Here, too, she had lived in unsanitary conditions with “many stray cats that she was accumulating in an addictive way, confining them under her roof without too much consideration to part with them,” the French daily explained. But without realizing that she was imposing unenviable living conditions on little cats.

An “atrocious fate”

In court, the defendant challenged any abuse and always claimed to know what she was doing. “If it’s true that I was a little overwhelmed by these 111 cats, it was a temporary situation, because I wanted to create my association in order to get them adopted,” she said.

The civil parties’ lawyer, on the other hand, denounced “an atrocious fate for the animals”, while stressing the defendant’s “denial” attitude. According to prosecutor Sophie Mauboussin, the accused selfishly sought to satisfy a personal need to the detriment of the health of the cats. She sought a 6-month suspended prison sentence.

Judgment will be rendered on July 11.
