[EN VIDÉO] Is medicine catching up with science fiction?
Some recent developments in medicine may be reminiscent of what can be read or seen in books or science fiction films.

What project allows all to virtual reality to the treatment of the patient through radiotherapy.

Reminder: What is radiation therapy?

Radiation therapy is one of the three major therapeutic weapons against cancer with surgery and chemotherapy. Today, in Western countries, 60% of patients receive radiation therapy during their care. Le principe thérapeutique à l’œuvre is the destruction of cancer cells by ionizing rays targeted at the tumor and sparing healthy tissues as much as possible. Technological advances in radiotherapy have led to a continuous improvement in accuracyirradiancetaking into account the movements, the reproducibility of the sessions by an adaptation to the evolutions of the tumor and its environment. These advances also help to minimize the side effects of treatments.

The Hartmann Radiotherapy Institute (ELSAN Group) offers high-precision techniques to patients and, in recent days, a virtual reality experience – called VORTHEx – allowing patients to experience a preliminary simulation of the treatments performed through two Cyberknifes from the center. This innovative experience was developed thanks to expertise 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, a unit of the Dassault Systèmes group specializing in the development of virtual reality tools.

In reality, the virtue of patient experience service

Faced with the severity of their treatment against cancer and the distressing feeling that can emanate from radiotherapy treatment rooms, patients often find themselves weakened. They are struggling with the protocolsappointments with specialists and articulated robots large sizes in the radiotherapy room that move around them. These conditions do not always prepare them peacefully for their treatment of radiotherapy. The VORTHEx project aims to improve the patient experience, which is in radiotherapy through a virtual care room, space. Jume of the new Hartmann Institute radiotherapy room ”.

The process of virtual reality has already proven itself in the field of medicine. Thus, in VR (Virtual reality) was used to reduce the painrelieve stress and anxiety, overcome addiction, improve rehabilitation methods in patients who have undergone a stroke

What is the VORTHEx project?

The VORTHEx project allows people with cancer to better understand the value of their treatment, to visualize it through virtual reality to better understand it. It will be held for the first time at the Hartmann Institute of Radiotherapy, which has a des the latest therapeutic innovations, the Cyberknife robot developed by Accuray. The latter allows to treat tumors thanks to a high-precision technique that radiates very small volumes touched. It targets the diseased area exactly and therefore does not affect similar tissues. Through the VORTHEx project, patients for 3D visualization « all technical and protocol components of treatment namely: the room, the Cyberknife robot arm, the patient’s position, the modalities and the stages of the sessions »(Source: site 3DEXPERIENCE Lab). This 3D initiative that aims to prepare patients before treatment is a world first.

Accompany the patient to maximize the chances of recovery

Thanks to the use of 3D simulation tools 3DEXPERIENCE Lab of Dassault Systèmes, patients have the opportunity to see the future treatment that they will receive. In this unique experience, they will be accompanied by a person from the care team, who will be at the same time answering all the questions of the treatment process.

The VORTHEx project accompanies patients in their illness. Indeed, a better understanding of treatment will give them a better chance of succeeding in the face of their cancer. The purpose of the experiment is to familiarize them with the protocol, location, and treatment tools. The implementation of the VORTHEx project aims to improve the comfort of patients, to reduce their apprehension, to deepen their understanding of the radiotherapy protocol.

According to the Hartmann Institute of Radiation Therapy, support for people with cancer upstream and downstream of their treatment is essential to fighting the disease. It is therefore only natural that the center has partnered with the Institut Rafael. This European center provides free support to patients before and after their cancer. The two institutes, as well as an ELSAN institution, pool their expertise to provide patients with the time andenergy which they will need to rebuild themselves in the best arrangements.

3DEXPERIENCE laboratory to accompany innovation

3DEXPERIENCE The lab is an initiative launched by Dassault Systèmes. The company’s goal is to help launch projects initiated by Start-ups having chosen a subject the following: Ville, Vie, Style of life, Ideation or FabLab. Those who will be selected will be able to be accompanied for 2 to 5 years. The program 3DEXPERIENCE Lab will provide them with virtual simulation tools that allow them to develop their project. Through his program 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, Dassault Systèmes want to support creation and allow new experiences by making a positive impact in today’s society and for the world of tomorrow.
