The six-year-old Malinois shepherd, who was assigned to the Gendarmerie Surveillance and Intervention Platoon (PSIG), was awarded a National Defense bronze medal on Tuesday, Le Maine Libre reports. This trophy, awarded “exceptionally”, congratulates him “for the services rendered during his career in the ranks of the national gendarmerie.” Messi will retire in the coming weeks.
The Malian Shepherd’s track record should be highlighted: he trained as a special defense runner at the National Gendarmerie Training Center for the Gendarmerie, he had been assigned to southern Sarthe, but was working throughout the region. Since then, he has carried out more than 330 interventions, including 70 in judicial operations. He has also secured presidential and ministerial visits. In particular, he was engaged in 2021 in the search launched after the assault with a knife by a municipal police in La Chapelle-sur-Erdre (Loire-Atlantique), also reported by Le Maine Libre.
“His flair has allowed him to find several missing persons and to avoid dramatic issues or to direct the search of the gendarmes of the territorial units in charge of these disappearances”, an explanation in the local newspaper Les Nouvelles Frédéric Boucheron, the commander of the company of La Flèche.
The PSIGs “are units whose primary vocation is the fight against public road crime, carried out in a preventive and dissuasive manner, in the most sensitive sectors and periods, including at night”, explained on the website of the Ministry of l „Interior.
