For the second year in a row, the city of Nice tops the magazine’s charts 30 million friends which for the past six years has ranked cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants where “it’s good to live with your dog.” Once again, Henry-Jean Servat is proud. The city councilor for animal protection said last year that he wanted to keep the post.
In one year, things have changed for the place des chiens in Nice: city agents can now come to work in the office with their dog, the tram welcomes all dogs regardless of size, the second beach for dogs is open and croquettes are distributed to homeless dog owners. In the announced and upcoming projects, the brigade specializing in animal abuse “whose training is underway” should be launched “next year.”
“A third beach and spaces for courir son chien in center-ville”
“We are looking at concrete actions, which are already in place,” said Katia Renard, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, who is in Nice to present the award. In total, about thirty criteria were evaluated in five different themes (accessibility, properties, awareness, involvement and free conversations). The appointment of an elected official is also one of the elements observed. We have seen that the work of Henry-Jean Servat and his team has lifted the last obstacles because Nice has always been on the podium ”.
Even at the top of the rankings, the city did not get a “20/20”, the magazine gave it a rating of 18.5 / 20. Katia Renard continues: “There is always room for maneuver. And then you can always hope for the best for your pet. »
The municipal councilor and his team still have a lot of projects in mind to report in a new title to the next edition. “We would like a third beach, but it also allows pet owners to run them in large green spaces, even in the city center, once these parks are closed, for example. »
A ranking for sharing ideas
In the town hall, ideas of “canine crèche” to “drop his dog on visits to monuments” and “feline behaviorists” were then fused. Initiatives sometimes already tested in other communes.
“The purpose of this ranking is not to point out cities that are not making an effort. On the contrary, it is possible to allow those in research to share with them what exists, to follow their example, so that in turn, they can set up such initiatives, says the editor of the magazine. After that, they have to hold their owners accountable. Cities will be able to do whatever they want, and efforts must also come from them. »
For her, the dog is the “Trojan horse of the rest of the living.” These actions can then be extended to cats, an element that is already part of the criteria of the list. “As soon as you are sensitive to an animal, you are sensitive to the rest of the animals but also to the vegetation.” It’s a whole awareness movement, ”concludes the editor.
