What is the average cost of home insurance in 2022?

As every year, Assurland unveils average home insurance rates, region by region. These contribution amounts come from the 35,000 home insurance quotes that were obtained on our home insurance comparator between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

Increase in the average price for homes

The very first finding is that the average price is up from last year, excluding the apartment. In 2021, insuring a home averaged 252 euros per year. This year he will have to count 260 euros for one year (+ 3.17%).

On the apartment side, on the other hand, the contributions remain stable: like last year, you will have to pay on average 180 euros to cover his lodge. This constancy in collective housing seems to be partly due to the fact that houses are more exposed to one of the main factors of increase: natural disasters.

This year-on-year increase is in reality part of a continuation of rising prices that have accumulated over the last ten years, largely due to climatic causes. As our study revealed last week, home insurance rates have risen 33% since 2010or more than twice as much as inflation over the period (+ 13.2%).

In question: the lack of housing maintenance, as a result of the various periods of economic recession, the resurgence of flights, especially in some regions, may, in particular, the increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters.

Natural disasters: an accident that is intensifying

These last costs are becoming more and more expensive for insurers, as they affect more homes each year or cause more damage. In 2021, the damage caused by natural events appears to be estimated $ 4.7 billion by securing Swiss Re for $ 900 million by 2020.

It must be said that the past year has been particularly devastating. According to Swiss Re, this is the the second most expensive year for Europe in terms of insured losses caused by the “How born”. The problem remains that this part of the damage covered remains weak: at $ 4.7 billion in destruction, only about a quarter has been insured.

Above all, forecasts are pessimistic about the occurrence of such claims in the future. Three major insurance players (ACPR, France Assureurs, and the Covéa group) recently concluded a increase in accidents by 2050, especially for droughts and floods. For the record, the floods of July 2021 weighed the most on the cost of accidents last year.

A northwest / southeast tariff split

Logically, therefore, it is the regions most exposed to these hazards (the southeast) that have to pay the highest contributions. Thus regions PACA and Occitania, which show the largest increases since 2010 cu respectively + 33.3% and + 40.6%.

Still, that’s fine the Ile-de-France care remains the most expensive region to provide housing, with an average cost of 242 euros per year (+ 32% compared to 2010). Here, the price of coverage follows that, structurally rising, of real estate in Francilien: the most expensive housing is the most expensive to insure.

Conversely, housing insurance premiums are the cheapest on average in Brittany. More broadly, the three westernmost regions (Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire) are experiencing the lowest rate developments since 2010.

How to pay less for home insurance?

Of course, the cost of coverage is also related to the chosen formula. The higher the warranty, the higher the price. In the quotes of our Internet users, we notice thata majority (56%) opt for a basic formulacare usually includes civil liability, water damage, theft, fire, and cat nat, with obsolete compensation deducted in the event of a claim.

The other half of internet users opt for a superior formula, which includes additional guarantees (electrical damage, broken glass, valuables …) and a replacement of furniture based on new value. This option is billed approx 20 to 25% more expensive.

Thus, to be sure to benefit from the most comprehensive formulas at the best price, it is recommended to periodically request online home insurance quotes: “Going around the market every eighteen to twenty-four months made it possible to find more interesting deals. », explains Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of Assurland.com.
